Dedicated Web Hosting Explanation

When we speak of hosting web servers, there are 3 main varieties - shared hosting web servers, VPS (private virtual web servers) and dedicated servers. Shared web servers accommodate multiple customers and thus the system resources per user account are limited, virtual private server plans give you more server configuration liberty, but also influence other private virtual hosting servers on the hardware node if utilized imprudently, and dedicated servers offer you the option to carry out everything you choose without interfering with anyone else.

Why would you need a dedicated server?

Dedicated servers are generally much more high-priced than shared servers or private virtual hosting servers. Why would anyone, then, use them? The answer is rather simple. If your firm has a resource-demanding web page, or just has very special server setup requirements, the most appropriate choice is a dedicated server. For someone who is willing to invest in safety and reliability, the bigger price is not a concern. You are granted full root-level access and can use 100 percent of the web hosting server's system resources without anyone else using these resources and messing with your sites.

Hardware architectures

Most web hosting suppliers, including us at Progress Hosting, provide several hardware architectures you can select from in consonance with your needs. The hardware configurations offer different types of processors, a different number of cores, different RAM and server hard disk drive sizes and different web traffic allowances. You can select a web hosting CP, which is a useful graphical user interface if you wish to use the hosting server for hosting purposes only and choose not to use a Secure Shell terminal for all the modifications you will be making. We offer 3 types of Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The Control Panel of your choice

If you are a self-reliant Linux user (our servers are running on Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could manage your dedicated server through a Secure Shell tunnel only. That, though, could be inconvenient, especially if you wish to give full server root privileges to someone else who has less technical skills than yourself. That is why having hosting CP software installed is an excellent idea. The Hepsia Control Panel interface that we offer does not include complete server root access and is mostly suitable for somebody who maintains many web portals that swallow plenty of system resources, but wishes to administer the online portals, databases and email mailbox accounts using an easy-to-use Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel Control Panels, on the other hand, grant complete root-level access and offer 3 access levels - root, reseller and user. If you intend to resell hosting plans rather than using the web hosting server solely for yourself, you should choose one of these two.

Web server monitoring and backup services

Last but not least, there is the matter of monitoring the dedicated server and of backing it up. In case of a predicament with your dedicated web hosting server, such as a non-responsive Apache or a network outage, it is desirable to have some sort of monitoring system enabled. Here at Progress Hosting the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you order a Managed Services upgrade, they monitor the individual services on the dedicated server as well. Backups are also a bonus option - the hosting provider offers you data backups on our own backup web servers. You could select a type of RAID that would allow you to keep the same data on 2 hard disks as a precaution in case of a hard disk failure, or in case someone whom you have ranted full root-level access deletes something accidentally.
